So if the canister is above the tank, and the surface level is above the tank, and the output tube of the doser is above the tank, then what? the entire contents syphon into my aquarium in one big gravity induced dump.I would caution about using it above the tank. You don't want a siphon to dump the entire container of ferts into the tank.

Ever consider floating the pump? If you silicone some strategically placed foam to the pump, it will always be at a constant level relative to the water level. The same head pressure, just slightly different distance. As long as your tubing is securely fixed before it gets to the tank with some extra in there, you shouldn't tug on the end where it doses and you should get more consistent results.
