Perhaps as fungus of some sort. Happens on wood, and disappears after a bit. Had some on my manzanita once. Not sure about it returning, though.

Ultimately, several months. Mind you, it's in a mineralized soild tank.

New tank? My microsword (lileaposis of some sort) became entangled with cladophora, which eventually faded as the tank became established.

Also, the microsword was originally in emersed form and came in much smaller and thinner after converting to submersed form.
