I use Jobe's, miracle grow spikes and osmocote sraight in the substrate. Have never found any of them to do any harm. Just don't over load them. I would use a good quality paste-type furniture wax instead. I usually apply it with very fine steel wool and then buff it with a cloth. The water should bead up on it.

I don't know about Aaron, but my finish is 3 years old now with no issues. BUT if I had to do it all over again, I'd use a stone countertop surface and do my plumbing up through the bottom of it. I'd never have to worry about spills.
